Hermann and Maria Braun are getting married in a town hall, which has just been hit by a bomb during the Second World War. Two days later Hermann has to return to the front and doesn’t make it back once the war is over. Maria waits, eking out a living and then receives the news that he is dead. She works in a bar and begins a relationship with a black GI. One evening, when she’s just about to go to bed with him, Hermann walks through the door. She strikes her lover dead. In court, her husband takes all the blame on himself and goes to jail for her. In his place, Maria strives towards a better life. Towards a common future on the Big Day, the day of his second return. She learns the basic economic laws of the boom years of the just founded German Republic and believes herself to be in control of her emotional life which is, however, dictated by economic rules. A mistake for which she will end up paying a high price. »The Marriage of Maria Braun«, the 38th film made by Fassbinder in his short lifetime, is the first part of the Federal Republic of Germany trilogy (after »Lola« and »The Longing of Veronika Voss«) and is at the heart of Fassbinder's confrontation with the founding myths of the Federal Republic.

■导演简介
托马斯•奥斯特玛雅生于1968年，是目前欧洲首屈一指的新生代戏剧导演，他导演的剧作以扎实的现实主义风格为基调，同时又通过精准却出乎意料的戏剧表达赋予剧作强烈的象征力量；他执导于柏林著名的邵宾纳剧院，曾经担任法国阿维尼翁戏剧节的艺术总监。其作品集中表现当代生活中的真实与残酷，关注社会边缘。即便是《玩偶之家》《丹东之死》这样的经典，奥斯特玛雅也对其进行大胆的改编与重构，直面当代现实。导演风格上，他受梅耶荷德与格洛托夫斯基影响发展肢体动作谱系，强调戏剧节奏。
The Schaubühne, situated in a striking former cinema designed by Erich Mendelssohn on Kurfürstendamm in West Berlin, is one of the best known German theatres in the world and plays over 100 performances across the globe every year. Its Artistic Director is Thomas Ostermeier. The programme focusses on social and political issues, and one of the theatre’s distinctive features is a wide range of directing styles, which also includes new forms of dance and musical theatre. Alongside directors from Berlin such as Thomas Ostermeier, Michael Thalheimer, Falk Richter and Marius von Mayenburg internationally renowned directors from abroad work here. The productions concentrate on telling stories – both classical and contemporary – and on the ensemble, which includes film stars like Nina Hoss and Lars Eidinger. The theatre and its directors have won numerous awards.

The Schaubühne is a famous Modernist and international theatre in the world. Since its establishment in 1962, the theater has attracted many well-known directors building up the history of the theatre. It used to locate on the bank of Hudson River and now sits at the Lehnigner Square. Every year, the theater is invited to tour in different countries and directors, works and troupes of the theater won international awards many times. The theater has achieved many impressive accomplishments under the guide of Thomas Ostermeier and enjoyed a growing popularity among the public, unmatched by other German theaters.
